Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct, Johannesburg

Take a tour of Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct, a hilltop precinct that overlooks the downtown area and serves as the home of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. Built in the late 19th century by Boer settlers, the complex was used as a prison until 1987--prominent figures like Nelson and Winnie Mandela, as well as Mahatma Gandhi were jailed here. On a tour of the complex, now a museum, you can delve into the country's turbulent history, human rights struggles, and democratic progress. • I love this place! It contains a rich south African history and as a law student it has virtually become my second home. I spend most of my time here, mostly in the gallery observing court cases but it caters for everyone. However, today I was at Constitution Hill to attend a legal critical thinking workshop and it was remarkable. If you ever go to Constitution Hill, don't leave without partaking in one of their amazing tours. You will not regret it.
  • This place is charged with history and significance, I was brought to tears many times during the eloquent guided visit of the Constitutional Court. The attention to detail of the architects into place making and the identity and history of South Africa being celebrated in the Court is mesmerising. I got to enjoy it as an Architect and as temporary resident of SA. The inclusion of all history and the memories of the tangible past, leads to believe that SA is very much directed towards a future even brighter, when acknowledging the power of its people.
