Dug out manually by 50,000 miners, The Big Hole is an example of open-pit mining, now filled with water. When the diamond mine closed in 1914, the site--possibly the world's deepest hand-dug hole--became a popular tourist attraction. You can take a guided tour to learn more about the area's mining history and see a reconstruction of a typical mining settlement from the 1880s. An elevator can take you down a disused shaft--you may want to skip this if you're at all claustrophobic.
