Witness the often-overlooked World Heritage Site of Meroe Pyramids, built to hold the tombs of kings and queens that used to rule in this area. Lying in the vast desert next to the Nile, the pyramids number more than 200 and are split into three groups. With their narrow bases and steep sides, they cut an unusual profile. You can walk among the brick structures and inspect the scriptures and wall reliefs. Make sure to bring lots of water and wear proper attire for an outing in the desert. Simply beautiful. The ignored history of these Nubian pyramids is astonishing. You get to have the whole site to yourself. You can also camp next to the pyramids either in the permanent camp or find a cheaper option (bring your own tent or find a local guide).
amazing place a few hours drive from Khartoum. Contrary to Egypt, this place is not yet invaded by tourist and some of the pyramids are still half way rebuilt and covered with sand. it feels like a real archaeological discovery. Sudan people are very nice and the number of places to visit warrant a week stay.
