Komodo's most famous resident is of course the Komodo dragon, the largest living species of lizard, but they are far from the only attraction on the island. Komodo's interior consists of wide savannahs and forest-clad hills, and horses, buffalo, civets, macaques, and Javan deer live alongside the 2 m (10 ft) long dragons. Islanders, said to descend from exiled convicts, reside in traditional houses on stilts. To the east, finger-like peninsulas sport beaches with sand tinted pink from the local coral. The waters around the island boast some of the richest biodiversity in the world, with dolphins, whales, turtles, sharks, rays, and thousands of species of fish thriving among the coral reefs, mangrove swamps, and seaweed forests.
